I really want to get published, and am not prepared to spend a lot of money. American Publishing says that they can publish books for free, but I'm not sure. Anyone had success with them? Please help!

I have read nearly all of their website, so I know much about them. I just want to know if anyone has any successes or disasters with them!
Anyone have any alternative companies (not self-publish)??????

I've never heard of American Publishing Company. You're not talking about Publish America are you? If so, NO you should definitely not trust them, and here's why: http://www.absolutewrite.com/forums/showthread.php?t=10211

If you have a completed manuscript and are determined to see your work published, then your best bet is to query a reputable agent because most publishers do not accept unagented work. But beware! There are just as many bogus agents out there looking to take advantage of naive, aspiring authors as there are bogus publishers. A legitimate agent will not charge you any kind of submission or reading fee. A legitimate agent will not tell you, "Your work looks promising, but you need to submit it to blah blah Editing service (which, surprise, surprise, will charge you a fee) before I can consider it." This is a scam! A legitimate agent only gets paid when they sell your book to a publisher.

A copy of Writer's Market 2007 would be a good investment. It's about $30. If you can't afford it, you should be able to find a copy in your local library. It lists reputable agents and publishers, along with their submission guidelines. Guidelines can vary from agent to agent, so it is important to follow them precisely.

For more helpful information, http://www.absolutewrite.com/forums/ is a good place to ask further questions about the process of publishing or to find out if your work is even ready to be submitted.

Good luck!

I've been a writer and published for about 40 years, and with no offense, the quote "You get what you pay for" is extremely valid.

I'll do some research though.

You don't state here any terms they suggest, or what they offer for "FREE"

Do they state things such as they take over control of the copywrite? Do they take any/all royalties, forever, allowing that as payment? Do they offer YOU anything beyond just publishing?

Again with no offense, do you have something valid to publish? have you tested it perhaps with other houses, who likely reject thousands of manuscripts every week? Has anyone even family read your work and encouraged that "YOU'RE GREAT"?

A couple more, then I'd be happy to connect through e mail with an aspiring author.

Is writing a passion or a profit motive for you? Do you/can you, spend hours a day inspired? Have you attempted essays, articles, etc. in small, initial steps, having them published? Do you journal? What education do you have in writing/ journalism/ etc.? Can you handle rejection slips, or total disregard of any submitted work?

Once more, with no offense, your Q reminded me of one org. that is as much a scam as any I've ever encountered, "Poetry.Com" If you know ANYTHING about them you'll "GET IT" with regard to the point.

ADD ON: I just did a general WWW search and find dozens of sites that have the words American and Publishing in the context of the link. What links do you have?

It's a good move to find out exactly what are their policies and conditions before you make any commitments to have them publish your work!!!!

one better information that Rupert Murdoch has created his very own money generating loop: submit the e book, then grant it damaging publicity. That way its enemies watch FOX and its pals study the e book. Win-win for Murdoch. Lose Lose for u . s ..
