...by saying they're "telling the truth"?

Yeah, truth *can* hurt, but it's not necessary to go out of your way to make *sure* it hurts, is it?

No, thank the Gods, I'm not talking about anyone I date! I'm thinking of a few relatives of mine and pundits like Bill O'Reilly, actually.

Honey.! Your relatives don't see themselves as mean when they do that.Truth to them is as they view the problem. You can listen, then agree or disagree up to you. Sometimes tact isn't one of their assets and due to issues of their own they come on too strongly or nasty. Hopefully they are trying to help you out of love and concern for your welbeing. If it's just snide remarks or jealousy ,then remember. "No one can make you feel inferior with out your permission." Eleanor Roosevelt
As far as T.V. Or Radio guys giving their opinion. It's all for show and ratings a persona they've developed, No matter how crass or mean it gives them the ratings and that's what's important to them and their stations. Not the fact that they're selling their soul to get them.
I hope that helps. Ciao

Empowerment and the lack thereof--
here is a psychology lesson from college courses years back..

The boss yells at the worker, the worker yells at the spouse, the spouse yells at the offspring, the offspring kick the pet, the pet bites the neighbours.
Why doesn't the worker yell back at the boss?
Money is the answer to everything..and neighbours is a big word for some.
Money is empowerment and love of neighbours is a hard concept to grasp.
Ever hear that song..shout, shout, shout it all out.
So we live in a world where when my fridge breaks and I don't know how to fix it and I can't afford to ask someone to fix it..
the only rational solution and present day acceptable solution everywhere
is to smash the neighbours windows like everybody else. Cause others is bottom of the totem for our social structure.
Empowerment..respects that I may be stupid about somethings but I'm not stupid about all things..
marriage is a 50/fifty split not legalized slavery or prostitution. Work is work we all work.
Argh, the alien sponges have taken over..only some get paid in a balanced way.
And money is the answer to everything.
Our creator gave us the prime directive although we are all different.
Love doesn't nail another to a wall and force them into a mold like an idol of stone. Use your words-just say
- takes one to know one, or
so- look me in the face and say I hate you.that's all right. I can drink with someone else Then as the birds say- birds of a feather flock together.
No being a complete sentence. Regroup.
Money is the answer to everything. But move on.

I think selfishness makes these types see other peoples faults and since they want to improve their low self esteem they try to tear apart others to build themselves up. Little do they know to do that, they must build up others to improve their own self worth.

depends on the context and what the person who asked the question expected in return from the answerer isn't it? just because we don't always get the response we want, doesn't mean the person we asked is being mean... rule is simple - don't ask for an honest opinion if you don't want it.

i'm a very honest person, i'm very thrutful but it's in my experience that it's not the message but how it is transmitted. i can tell that "hey with that skirt, u look like a whore" but i rather say " do you think this skirt is appropriate? if i were u i would change"...u see what i mean?

Because people are rude, they won't hold back, trust me. Just be rude back, it always works, and it shows that you are not hurt from what they said to you.
