February, from a historical perspective, seems like a logical place to put it. Still, it's hard to get around that Black History Month lands in the only month with fewer than 30 days, and it continues to look pretty puny when compared to the traditional White History Year.
I don't think we'd study the contrributions of black americans much at all if we didn't have this month. It's sad, but it's what I see. We don't have a hispanic history month, and I recall history teachers routinely just skipping all the chapters pertaining to hispanics in our history textbooks. It's not like nothing was written about them!

Believe it or not, some people actually believe it has been chosen because it is the shortest month.
February was chose because even though the 13th Amendment to the Constitution (abolished slavery) was signed in January, the slaves didn't hear the news until in February. In 1976, the week-long celebration was changed to a month-long celebration.
By the way, have you ever studied history?

We wouldn't need a black history month if we didn't
get pumped full of all the lies from the history books
taught in our schools. They were highly inaccurate
and didn't convey the truth or the important points that
all americans need to know. So minorities will have
to make sure everyone gets the true history and not
the bullshit that was handed down over the years.

All these stupid son of bitches on here. For that dude that made the first comment, go lick ur white frinds *** crack. But anyway thats a good question, And what happened is it started out as a day, then a week and then into a month. Now its a year. If you have ever seen a Micky D's commercial and they say "celebrating black histosr 365 days a year". Its not just Feburary anymore. So that *** hole come to my house and suck on my choc. ****! OK I was pissed. I'm kool now...
I went to skool and asked my teacher and its because Carter G. Woodson shoose the month because 2 of his favorite people were born in that month. They were George Washington, and Abe Lincoln. So thats why.

why is every thing about racism. you get a month which is 28(or 29 in a leap year) days more than it deserves. Why do we need a black history month. Why is it important for me to learn about black history, why must it be forced upon school children. If it is important enough in history then it should be taught in a normal history class. If it's not that important then it should be left up to the idividual to learn on their own.

I'm floored by this question. I am Irish. We actually do have a month of celebration too. It is March. But most people do not know about it and when they do, they think they are supposed to get drunk all month.
quid pro quo - Do you think it is because the Irish are all drunks (even the babes, lads, and lasses)?

Do people actually believe that type of stuff? I honestly didn't know why either, so I looked it up. It was due to the birthdays of Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass. Check it out on Wikipedia.
