Depending on who is purchasing the gift, if your a friend, I would get her a day at the spa for when shes ready to get out, or give her an "IOU girls day out" for when she ready and go out with some friends while daddy stays home with the baby, and treat her to a day of fun, maybe a spa, then lunch, and a movie, or if she doesn't want to be away to long due to nursing, then maybe a massage and lunch. Something for just her is what she will probably enjoy. If your her husband, then I think give her a day of relaxation, let her sleep in, make her breakfast in bed followed with a nice vase of flowers, clean the house for her, throw in some laundry, take care of baby for her, while she relaxes. Then for dinner, have someone come over to watch the young one while you take her to a nice restaurant for dinner, or if shes not ready to leave baby yet, then make a nice dinner (or order in if your not a good cook) and after dinner let her relax in the tub and once out, give her a nice massage. If your looking for something more present wise then get her a gift card to buy some clothes since shes probably going to want something new now that she can fit into regular clothes soon, or something a little more expensive you could buy her a ring that says "mom" on it, or a nice charm or bracelet that says mom. Depends on the type of person she is. I know when I was just a new mom, which was only 4 months ago, my fiance spent his day off just letting me relax, since I am the one getting up all night with the baby, so he let me sleep in, and just enjoy me for a day. It was nice, and at the same time I could still be home and enjoy my bundle of joy. Plus he got time to be with baby.
And if your a friend or family member, you and some others could just come in and let her put her feet up and tidy up for her. I know once the baby comes the house is let go for a bit while you adjust to the baby, so she might enjoy just a simple gesture of someone helping out for the day, and while your at it, you could maybe run some errands for her, do some grocery shopping and just let her enjoy baby and not have to worry about dishes or laundry for a day. Theres so much you could do, just put some thought into it. Good Luck

Instead of getting something for the baby (although you can do that too!) get her something to use for herself! Give her a coupon for a free night of babysitting so her and her partner can go out and spend time together, even if it's just a lunch date. Offer to come over and clean up around the house and do laundry. Buy her a good book or a favorite cd. Get a gift certificate for a salon so she can go and pamper herself a little bit. These are all things that I would have appreciated after I had my son. Especially the laundry bit! Babies go through soooooo many onesies and bibs! Women that have just had babies also don't feel so wonderful about their appearance, especially since she probably barely has time to shower - let alone get dressed and do her make-up or her hair. A gift certificate is a great idea. Maybe you could tag along with her and watch the baby while she gets pampered. That way she won't have to leave her newborn, but she'll get a few precious moments to herself. You seem like a great friend!

The best gifts I ever received where some of my friends just bringing over dinner. Not having to worry about where the food was coming from for one night was a blessing.

Then, another time someone volunteered to come over for a few hours on the weekend to hangout with the baby so I could get some sleep. It was wonderful.

If you an figure out a way to package sleep - that is the best gift a new mom can ever get. I dare anyone to challenge me on that one.

Well, you could watch the baby while she takes a nap...

I will tell you what the best gift you can do is make sure the house is clean and picked up. Do the work before she comes home. Than she will come home to a clean picked up house and all she has to worry about is that little baby.

Now if she is already home I would buy her flowers and balloons.

The best gift for her now would be something for her self. If you are willing to spend you can arrange a “at home” spa or a beauty treatment.

bless you for wanting to do this its very sweet & considerate.
a good thing for a new mommy would be maybe bath beads, mothers ring/necklace, fragrant bath powders, lotions(she will definitely will need this)whatever she may be interested in. Books, puzzles games, sewing etc. perhaps even beautiful flowers to enforce you think SHE is still beautiful too.
