This is a tricky one!The Egyptians were master stone masons, and thier use of stone in architecture is still beyond the ability and knowledge of modern architectural skill.Attempts to replicate their exacting technique, using the type of tools available to the Ancient Egyptians have failed.
They were masters of more than one stone type.
Going to great lengths and extreme effort to obtain the correct material, so to ensure the required effect.
A great example of this would be the amazing construction of the pyramids.
The local stone was limestone and sandstone. Both were available on the Giza plateau site.
But the casing or outer layer of stone was traditionally of pink or white granite a very hard stone. It was quarried cut and brought by barge from as far away as Aswan .
To do this, they had to wait until the Nile's annual innundation. This is the time of year when the Nile was at its height. When finshed and in place the pyramids gleamed and glistened in the desert sun.
The blocks were correctly measured and cut to size to such a fine degree by the craftsman, that it it is not possible to slide a playing card between spaces in the blocks.
It is another stroke of masonary genius was that no form of cement was ever nessessary in their construction.
We must remenber these amazing monuments that still resist the ravages of time, are around 5.500 years old.
Another achievement is one on an artistic level. That would be the development of the remarkable paint used by the Ancient Egyptians. It is used so beautifully to decorate the Pharonic tombs. These fantasic colors were made from naturally found in minerals, stones and plants.
Such as red and yellow from ochres which is a stone and the blue from the lotus, black from malachite a mineral( also used as kohl eyeliner).Just to name some.
No chemical additives were used, yet this paint is as bright and vibrant in color now as the day it was applied. Over 3,500 years ago,in other temples and the Famed Karnak site even older.Unless it has suffered from the flooding. As is the case of tombs in the Valley of the Kings and Oueens.Or by attempted destruction by man or solar forces in most cases it has survived and is still very beautiful.
