The question can be separated into two categories - in the past (throughout history) and the present....

...or, just, in general......what you think has maybe always been the case and still is...

And in addition, which do you think is the greatest issue of division specifically within only the U.S.? And if you care to elaborate, why?

class. it's not right, it's not okay, it's merely the ugly truth.

if you are a certain religion, you are put into a class. if you are a certain race, you are put into a certain class. if you are a certain culture, you are put in a certain class. be it high, be it low.

it has been this way since the beginning of time. Biblical times: the hebrews were made slaves because of their class. they were put in that class because of race and religion. Middle East: especially in Afganistan and Pakistan, if you were of Hazara ethnicity, you were put in the lower class. China: people from farther from the Pacific were considered a lower class because of cultural and racial history. Europe: during the Holocaust, Jews were a lower class because of religion and culture. USA: before the Civil Rights movement, African Americans were a lower class because of race and culture. Nowadays Everywhere: muslims are considered to be a seperate, not necessarily lower as much as away, class because of religion and culture.

i don't mean to offend anyone, i am just trying to be as close to factual as i can.

Class, because all over the world people are struggling to survive while the wealthy minority gets richer. So many countries have corrupt leaders that don't care that the people of the country are starving.

Even in America people work for minimum wage with barely enough money to put a roof over their heads. They are at the mercy of politicians who refuse to raise the minimum wage.

People with money have control and they want to keep it that way. If we all had a gazillion dollars in the bank and there was no class division amongst people I don't think that race and religion would matter to anyone.

religion is the biggest thing that separates people in the past and history. almost all major wars up to about 1700-1800 c.e. were fought because of religion.
As far as now in the u.s. i think that race is the big cause. this is because the united states is a mostly christian country and so there is no division of religion.

I think it depends upon where you are from and how you have been indoctrinated. Example, tribal conflicts in Africa and Iraq. Been going on forever, taught from generation to generation.
Ethnic cleansing, not strictly a third world issue. Taught from a young age.
Black/white in the US. I just don't get it.
Asians are full of their own problems for all of the above.
Religon plays a factor in all of it.

I think people in general need an enemy to validate themselves making their own faults worthy of praise. Consider sports as an example. All societies have sports to some degree, and in all someone wins and someone loses.

In short, I think the greatest threat to all mankind is competition.

Meya: To me, the biggest cause of world division is not race, religion nor class but - PREJUDICE . Prejudice is a barrier to any truth; therefore, people can not be believed due to the biases of others. When no one wants to listen nor hear-out an individual, he or she will lack understanding and fighting and war results. Blaming it all on race - religion - or class is an excuse for prejudice. "I'm right your wrong - and I'm going to make you do things my way " , results in ones attitude of mind-set. All people are prejudiced whether they are "religious" - atheistic - gnostics or agnostics , as there has been wars, killings, murders and crimes against humanity - all in the name of each's , individual cause.

Religion, without a doubt. More people have been killed in religious conflicts than from any other cause. One would be close to the mark to say that religion is the primary cause of most, if not all, of the strife and misery in the world today and all through history.

Of course, the pedophile priests have tried to set things right, but it's not working.

You won't learn this in a secular progressive school, but the greatest issue of world division is the war against radical Islam. Some do not think we are in a religious or terrorism war, but we are most definitely in one as proved by 911. Terrorism is a sub set of the greater root cause being radical Islam.

As far as America is concerned, our greatest division is a cultural war between secular progressives and traditionalists. Secularism is strongly supported by Hollywood, education and major media.

To give some background, secular progressives have socialistic and Marxism roots and there has always been a romanticism with Marxism by the social elite in entertainment, media and education. Also, the Democratic party has been influenced significantly by secular progressives and has changed the party and made it more left leaning. George P. Lakoff from the University of California, Berkeley is one of the fathers of secular progressives and the ACLU and is a major funding and enforcement body that influences liberal and secular progressive thought in the US.
Liberals and secularist progressives believe in the following:
Christians are obstacles to an "enlightened" society
Drugs should be legalized
Homosexual marriage is equal to marriage between a man and a woman
Abortion is good for society and is not the killing of a child
Euthanasia is also good for society and not killing an adult
America is the root of evil in the world
We should appease our enemies
Countries and boundaries are irrelevant, people should be allowed into the US without legal process and there should be open borders.
Government programs with high taxation are good for society

Secular progressives want to change America by weakening the country as a nation and significantly destroying the social fabric that has been been built over 200 years of our existence. Traditionalists do not want these changes because they believe it is immoral. This is a cultural war, the stakes are high, but I believe in America and a sense of morality will somehow prevail in the end.

Definately religion. Can you imagine if everyone in the universe had the same belief? Religion has always been the greatest world issue.

To put it very simply, lack of acceptance. If people accept other races, religion, etc. Than the world would be a better place.

As far as in the US, I think class is the most crucial. From there it splinters into race and religion. Class-ism feeds fuel to stereotypes of the other two.
