What about backpackers, laborers, people who lived before the 20th century.

It's pretty sad that they think 7-10lbs is a health risk. People have been lifting heavier weights for thousands of years.

Maybe it's the fact that they DON'T lift things that is hazardous.

The reason they consider it a health risk is because people who tend to carry big purses or backpacks tend to overpack them and do not position them properly on their shoulder or back. Therefore, when you are carrying an overpacked purse or backpack on a daily basis, eventually you will cause your spine to become improperly aligned or your muscles to become strained. Just because people have been lifting heavier weights for "thousands of years" doesn't mean they have been doing it properly and many of these injuries become apparent after carrying the purse or backpack for a prolonged period of time...it's not something that typically happens overnight. In the past, people just were not putting two and two together....that's why we do research on different medical injuries and ailments.

First thing they said when they diagnosed me with spinal problems was not to carry a heavy purse. Actually, it does put a strain on your spine. Try lifting some purses or a backpack. In the day, a lot of the older people did walk stooped over. It just wasn't diagnosed back then.

Repetitive motion injuries existed probably even back in the caveman days.

And considering modern man physiques are a far cry from the caveman type, I agree that being out of shape is also just as hazardous.

Whenever one repeatedly carries a weight unevenly on one side of his body, or uses one limb over and over performing the same motion, they are at risk for developing problems.

Balance and distribution of the weight along with proper lifting and carrying techniques with sufficient rest, stretching between loads is important.

Most women favor just one shoulder to carry their purses on. With time, it can lead to stress on the trapezius muscles of the shoulders as well as pull on the neck muscles.

And most women carry way too heavy purses.

I used to perform manual carrying 45 to 85 pounds on my back repeatedly but was never injured, probably because of the reasons above.

The human body is designed to develop muscles and carry a considerable amount of weight. You build up to it.

But when someone out of shape does this, they're at high risk for injuries such as sprains, strains of ligaments, etc.

I haven't heard anything about that. The only thing I can think of is that purses can pull your body to one side, unlike backpacks that evenly distribute the weight on your spine. People are so paranoid nowadays anyway. They find anything and everything unhealthy. It's really gotten ridiculous!

The main reason large purses are unhealthy is because we tend to over load them and then place them on one shoulder or the other, causing an imbalance when we walk. this imabalce tends to aggravaite any condition like bone structure problems, arthritis, back problems, etc. Back packs are not harmful if they are packed right and straps are fitted properly
