Even though a baby has a heartbeat at 18-22 days it does not mean it is detectable. In fact, a fetal heartbeat is not detectable until about the 10th week. Sometimes a little earlier (like 9 weeks) and sometimes a little later.

Heartbeats may be detected at around 5 1/2 - 6 1/2 weeks by doing a vaginal ultrasound. However, it's usually a few more weeks before doctors can hear the heartbeat when using this device. As long as your doctor didn't seem worried and given you're only 5 weeks pregnant, I wouldn't be too concerned yet unless you're having other signs of miscarriage. I've been pregnant 4 times and the only time they did the vaginal ultrasound was when they thought I had an impending miscarriage. I hope that you don't have any other signs. I found out I was pregnant at 5 weeks. I had a vaginal ultrasound done to make sure everything was okay because I got pregnant using the Mirena IUD. Things were fine, but there was no heartbeat (it was too soon). When I went back at 6 weeks, I could see the heartbeat with the vaginal ultrasound. At 6 weeks, you can see the heartbeat and I think it's not until 12 weeks that it beats loud enough to hear it. There's no cause for alarm, you just need to wait a little longer.

What else was seen...??
"Week Five
First heartbeats begin - If you have an early ultrasound you may not be able to recognize this tiny being as a baby, but there is no mistaking what it feels like seeing your child's heartbeat on that screen. That rhythmic beat is echoed in your own heart."
http://www.pregnancy.org/pregnancy/fetaldevelopment1.php
"A visible heartbeat could be seen and detectable by pulsed doppler ultrasound by about 6 weeks and is usually clearly depictable by 7 weeks. If this is observed, the probability of a continued pregnancy is better than 95 percent. Missed abortions and blighted ovum will usually give typical pictures of a deformed gestational sac and absence of fetal poles or heart beat."

First off I suggest you switch doctors. I had my first ultrasound with my last daughter at 5 weeks and 6 days due to having issues with the pregnancy. They wouldn't even think of checking for viability until I was almost 8 weeks along. At 5 weeks the baby is so small that it would be rather difficult to find the baby's heartbeat much less hear it. My cousin was 6 weeks and 6 days when they found her baby's heartbeat the first time. Take a minute and breathe. Definitly I would consider changing doctors. Take care and hope all goes well with the baby.

Generally the heart doesn't even start beating until you are at least 6 weeks pregnant. Keep in mind the little guy (or girl) still looks similiar to a tiny little tadpole with a small tail. The first time I saw my oldest on an ultrasound he looked like a litle fish.
I am sure everything's fine; it's just too soon.
Get plenty of rest and keep up your fluids. Try not to get too stressed out over the baby and your pregnancy. It's not good for you or your baby...
I suggest buying a book about pregnancy if the doctor hasn't given you one already. They tell you all about the stages of development including when a fetal heartbeat is detectable.
Good luck...

It's a little too early to be able to hear the heartbeat. Was your doctor concerned? If not, then don't worry about it! If it was something to worry about, your doctor would've said something then and there. They don't keep things from their patients like that. Calm down and find out what exactly that means for you. Most likely it's just the normal beginnings of pregnancy.

I am 8 1/2 weeks and I went to the dr. last week at 7 1/2 weeks. The ultrasound tech told me you cant really see anything until at least 6 weeks, so hang in there and be patient, I know its hard. GOOD LUCK!
