Copperhead was a general term for not just those that opposed the end of slavery, but for those who were against the war itself and various other issues. One specific group was the Knights of the Golden Circle active in the midwest. In some areas, particularly the border states (Missouri, Kentucky, and Maryland) and the states that experienced invaision (Pennsylvania, Ohio, and Indiana) they were simply called partisans. Certain politicians were also singled out as copperheads or "peace Democrats" such as Clem Vallandigham, who was exiled to the south during the war.

A Northerner with Southern sympathies and who supported slavery was called a doughface, pre-Civil War.

A Copperhead was a Civil War term for a supporter of peace by negotiation, the accepted way of supporting the South and its system.
