I'm getting a new xbox 360 in about three days, but I've heard that they overheat and crash a lot. Does anyone know how to prevent this? or if microsoft has fixed it? most thorough and helpful answer gets a best answer.

Microsoft has fixed the internals with some patches, but make sure to keep your 360 well ventilated. Also make sure you keep your power supply some place cool.

As a response to Adam, the PS3 is actually not better. The PS3 not only overheats, but the entire system was built poorly. If you know nothing about hardware, please don't make a conclusion on which is better.

First of all, don't play it for over 5 hours straight, this is ####### the Xbox, and it may be bad for the disk that's in the tray. After you play for a long time just let it sit, and also keep it well ventilated for about 20 minutes (at a minimum). Also, never put the Xbox straight up and down, always lay it down so that it is sitting longways. This is because if it is straight up and you knock it over, the disk may (but most likely) will scratch the game that is in the tray horribly.
All in all the Xbox360 (if you don't treat it badly) will work fine and if you follow what I have said you will be fine. Hope to see you on live!

Keep it well ventilated.

Also Adam A is an idiot, they don't overheat anymore when kept well ventilated and they only scratch the disk when moved.

When the console is moved around while the disk is spinning the disk might tilt and scratch against the casing of the DVD drive. Don't move it while a disk is inside and there won't be a problem.

Its amazing how Microsoft hasn't fixed it yet. My neighbor's 360 always freezes and it scratches the games. If you want a system similar to 360, but better, get PS3

I had this problem, what we did to fix the was to have it upright, and not enclosed (in a cabinet, or right next to a TV) by allowing a lot of air circulation and ventilation the chip will not over heat, that should prevent it

microsoft has fixed most of the overheating problems with their newest set of consoles but i would recommend one of the fans.
the fan that goes on the bottom of the console does not void the warranty

i could probably deliver it in any admire. Microsoft says that they are going to purely fix it out of guarantee if there are the pink rings. From first hand experience, i be attentive to it is not genuine.

Don't let your Xbox drive, then it won't crash. You honestly think a piece of machinery can drive better than you? Sheesh.
