hi zy2397! first off, congrats on ur new mac book! sounds sweet!
the reason your mac hd shows 54gb and not 80gb is because the operating system (os x), the iLife applications (iPhoto, Garage Band, etc) and lots of other useful software shipped with your sweet new mac take up space on your hard drive. turns out this is about 20gb... so no worries, it's normal your available space shows 54gb. if u want to increase that, uninstall unecessary applications (ask another question for that answer ;)
now go enjoy ur mac and please check out my FREE video podcast on iTunes: http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewPodcast?id=183309259

seems a little low. What the others say makes sense, but I would call apple and ask them if that is normal. The 360 had a problem that took up space, or the OS was not seeing the space properly, this is possibly your problem.
I cant wait to get a macbook. Cant wait to get off the windows addiction.
(although I will be dual booting XP)

When I got my 80 GB macbook it said I have 69 GB available . Probably you got the wrong model.
Click the blue Apple on the left upper corner, select "About this mac", the go to "More Info" and it'll tell you what model you have!

This is because of the discrepancy between hard drive manufacturer's interpretation of a gigabyte and what it really is. Manuf's perspective is that a GB=1000MB, when it is actually 1024MB. Also the preloaded OS and other stuff will bring that already lower number (80GB drive is about 74GB) down lower. Hope this answers your question!

OS X and the bundled software that came with your Macbook is taking up the 26 GB.

average betty is right, 80 is reflective of total space with nothing installed, if you uninstall unnecessary programs or add more memory you should be fine, you should be ok with 54, but if you want to add programs this will be limited.

That "80GB" is merely a reference number and not reflective of the true capacity of the drive once a "file system" is put on it. Apple's operating system, along with all of the included software that your system came with, all appears to have amounted to about 20GB. I'm not too surprised by that.
