The first thing to do is exactly what you're doing. Smiling alot and being nice. The next thing to do is listen to the other kids about what they're doing and figure out if they like what you like. Is sports a big thing for them, band, or the new tv show... once you hear someone talking about something you really like join in the conversation.
But whatever you do be aware how much you conform or stick out. Most people will say 'be yourself' but if you are a sport-hating, musical-loving person in a anit-music all sporting school then try to be what people seem to like. That feeling that the conforming people have more fun is NOT an illusion. They are. Why? Because everyone likes them and what they like.
Good luck finding friends. And if all else fails focus on school or something to take your mind off it.

Join a team or group. If your into sports try that . If not most schools have different programs that you could interact with your peers. ex: band/choir or the school play. Or try the yearbook staff. I would speak to your guidance counselor to find out which would be best for you. Good luck.

you really can't force friends but god, I know it's horrible. I've moved enough to know that. Go easy. There will be select few who'll come talk to you, be nice but don't be too shy to start a conversation with anyone. Try joining a few after school clubs. That helps too.

Get involved!!! Join some clubs and volunteer for specific duties where you have to talk to people.
That's what I always did (and I moved a lot). Band and theatre people always are the most frioendly to newcomers, I think.

aww i know how you feel and it can be hard. my advice would be to just be friendly to people. soon enough you'll make a friend. you can also try joining clubs or sports. thats a great way to get to know some people and have things in common.
good luck

do some kind of after-school activity that you enjoy. like sports or art or something. talk to people that like the same things you do. you'll fit right in. don't worry.
