No forget what he said this is more reliable that I am going to give you. Get the Divix Codec it is recommended by Microsoft for use in playing AVI files on Windows Media Player. It will give you a Divix player but just download it all and just us WMP to play the avi's once u installed the codec. http://www.divxmovies.com/codec/

Try downloading and installing http://www.videolan.org/vlc/ . It's free, no spyware, no viruses, and can view nearly any video file.
