v = s^3
1000 = s^3
(1000)^(1/3) = (s^3)^(1/3)
10 = s
so, 10 cm

If the volume is 1000 cm^3, then the formula is:

1000 = s^3

You need to find the number "s" so that s^3 = 1000.
Take the cube root of each side:

(1000)^(1/3) = (s^3)^(1/3) = s^(3/3) = s^(1) = s

If your calculator does not have the x^y function, then you will need another way to figure cube roots.

s = the cube root of V.

In other words, what value of s*s*s = 1000?

This particular case is easy, since you can determine from inspection that 10 * 10 = 100 and then 10 * 100 = 1000. So s = 10 cm.
