There are alot of propane conversion kit done on carbuated cars and trucks, before the canadain goverment subsided the propane conversion kits when the gas prices were going higher. Propane is a waste product of making fuels, it used to be burned off and there was no viable market. So now we do have a market for them, bbq, home heating, and propane powered cars. The propane conversion is quite expensive, as you need new cylinder heads, tanks to hold the propane, and a fuel regulator, special modified carbuator intake. Also most states would require re-certfication of your system every 5-10 years and alot of underground parking garage bans propane powered cars, same with ferries.

Propane is a good fuel if you have the proper engine ,but as a dual fuel setup you lose alot-propane has 140 octane where unleaded regular has only 87 (huge advantage for propane) Propane only has half the BTU's of gasoline (meaning in an identical engine it will take TWICE as much propane to produce the same power as gasoline) advantage gasoline. For the same reason you can use it inside in floor buffers and forklifts ,engines fueled strictly by propane will show ALMOST NO SIGNS OF WEAR and no sludge or gunk in an old engine-you can find pictures of 100,000 mile plus propane engines that look new inside-advantage propane .Here comes the rub, when propane was a waste product and sold for 40-60 cents a gallon and gas was a little over a dollar propane made sense but now in some places with the addition of the road tax PROPANE IS HIGHER so it makes little sense ,unless you build the engine strictly for propane and the advantages of it , most automobiles have 9.0 to 1 static compression using reg unleaded but taking advantage of propanes racing fuel like octane rating you can pump the compression ratio up to 17 to 1 ,a number that will boost power alot but break parts if you tried to do it with reg gas, also you can run the engine longer ,a plus for delivery trucks not so much joe average -then you have the huge tank and the problems of finding it -bottom line is unless you are going to cheat on the road tax and drive at least 80k miles a year it is a MONEY LOSER
