Chinese MP4/MTV Player is a class of flash based Digital audio player, mostly manufactured in China, capable of displaying images, videos, and text files. Although commonly called MP4 players, they are usually unable to play MP4 format videos and are limited to proprietary file formats such as MTV, DMV, MPV and AMV. This is beginning to change however, as more players are starting to support MP4 files. They are a variety of S1 MP3 Player. Most players include a viewer for image files, such as JPG and BMP. They also play MP3 and other audio files. Conversion software is usually included on a CD-ROM. Videos are playable in the AMV or MTV format, and are convertible from other common formats such as SMV using the conversion software. They also normally include an ASCII text viewer, so that e-books can be read, such as those downloaded from Project Gutenberg. Some units include a phone book application, a voice recorder, and an FM radio, making it possible to record FM broadcasts. Finally, some units include video games in the firmware.
MP4 players arent all that great. They dont have really good image quality.

Wow some misinformed answers....... And MP4 player has become a term generally used to describe a player that can play music as well as videos. But technically MP4 is a type of video file, the player may actually be able to play many more types than that. An iPod is a type of MP3/4 player. It's just a brand. And whoever said that MP4 players "Stole" iPod's idea is an idiot. Sony first came up with this idea with the Walkman. Apple stole Sony's idea, if anything. I wouldn't recommend a really cheap player. Get something from Samsung or Creative Zen or a Sony Walkman....or get a Zune or Ipod. These are the largest and mst reliable brands.

MP3 is an antiquated audio-only format that is, by virtue of having been around so long, universal to every digital music player out there.
MP4 is a "container" format that can combine any combination of compatible audio, video, still image, and text files into one file. The audio portion of this format is identified by the .M4A file extension (video is .M4V, if you hadn't guessed), sometimes also known as the AAC format. M4A sounds much better than MP3 at the same compression rate, which is why it's the default format for iPods.
