What is an example of a person being off-pitch? People are often accused of being "pitchy" on American Idol.

Off-Pitch means that they missed the note they were targeting, usually being a fraction lower or a fraction higher than they were supposed to be. It's more noticible to vocalists than other musicians because they are more used to hearing vocal music in detail.

A pitch is the level of sound someone is trying to hit.

When someone his off pitch, they are either sharp (high) or flat (low) of the pitch they were aiming for. Basically, it means a sound came out that wasn't intended.

American Idol is a great representation of people being off pitch for about 90% of the show.

it is annoying background music, generally consisting of popular songs done without words and using soft strings and maybe horns instead of the original instrumentation. As a result, much of the stuff is excessively cloying (supersweet) and burns itself into your brain despite all efforts to the contrary. If you want to ruin a good song for someone, turn it into elevator music. Although called elevator music (since that is a very common place to hear that type of music), it is also common background music in public spaces and hotel lobbies. If you have ever worked in a hotel (which I have), you understand how that music can really and truly drive a person insane.
