Clues to the ages of rocks include the position of the strata within a sequence of rocks( horizontality, lateral continuity ,superposition or younging upwards), and correlation by physical continuity or fossil successions, all of which give you relative ages. Numerical ages are derived from isotopic and, for rocks younger than ~40,000 years, radiocarbon dating.
