They say you do but i cheated . Go get a bottle of your favorite juicy juice and drink that an hour and half before or whatever they say . This will fill your bladder so you can still get a great ultra sound and since it juice it will not run through your system as fast so you won't feel as uncomfortable . Good luck and shhhh don't tell the doctor .
Ps alot of the ppl on here are telling you it dosen't matter . If you don't drink enough they will fill your bladder up for you and that is very uncofmortable plsu if you don't drink enough you will have a very crappy ultra sound . I had this expierance .

Hi there honey.
Just follow the directions that they give you. If they want you to drink a certain amount of water ( I used Fruit juice) they will tell you. You usually have to drink it about 30 to 60 minutes before your ultrasound is actually scheduled. I remember this as being the hardest thing I had to do while I was pregnant.
The rest room is right there nearby and you can jump off the table and run when it is over!
I have heard of some places that insert a catheter and fill your bladder that way. I would rather drink the water!
It has been quite awhile since I did this so it may have changed a bit, as I said, get directions from the place that is doing the ultrasound. They are your best source of advice.
Good luck honey!

It really depends on where you go and the person doing the ultrasound. With my first child I was told by the doctor to drink 20 oz of water, but when I got there they told me that I didn't need to have a full bladder. A good thing because I was almost in tears trying to hold it in.
On the other hand, with this one I have a different doctor and different hospital. I have to drink 32 oz in 15 minutes. The baby is so low that even when I don't have a lot to drink I still have to pee like every 1 1/2 hours or so. I have a very sneaky suspicion that I will have to pee before I even get half of the water down. So by the time I get to the hospital I will more than likely be in tears from the pain of trying to hold it in.

Hi - This is my second pregnancy and I've had 5 ultrasounds this pregnancy and have never had the ultrasound technician say anything about drinking water beforehand. An ultrasound has nothing to do with your bladder or otherwise showing a better image of the baby. It has everything to do with the jelly they put on the wand before placing it on your stomach. Also, it is not necessary for the technician to dig into your stomach so hard. If they are doing it right and are skilled enough, the ultrasound machine should pick up everything they need to take measurements and do a BPP (biophysical profile). Good luck and I hope this helps.

It depends on where you go. My OB office makes you drink water before an ultrasound, but I also see a high risk perinatologist and the machines are much better there so it's not necessary. That made my big ultrasound sooo much more comfortable this time. I remember I was miserable with my second sons ultrasound.

Drink 1 liter 45 minutes before your ultrasound. Your bladder needs to be full so the image will bounce back and can be seen. At your 20 week ultrasound you will have to come with a full bladder but then after taking the first image they will let you empty your bladder and do the rest of the ultrasound.

I've always drank a 500ml bottle of water finished 30 mins before the ultrasound and it's been fine. Any more then that and I'm to uncomfortable and they make me pee in the cup because I'm to full. Once you feel you have to pee you can stop there.

lol sorry had to laugh...I assume you are a first time mom? You do not have to drink a ton of water to get an ultrasound. Drink as you normally would before you go to the doctor. You are pregnant, believe me, if you take in what you normally do, your bladder will be full. Your water intake doesn't change the amount of amniotic fluid in the womb!
