People started moving west well before gold was discovered in California. Do you have any brothers and sisters? When everyone is grown up and married will you all live in the same house? The answer is no, you all need more room. That is basically the reasion for expansion. A family farmed in the east, one son takes over the farm when the parents die, the other sons/daughters move west where there was room for new farms. Also, after many years of farming the same land, eastern farms were worn out, people coulding make a living anymore. So they all moved west to start anew with new (unused) fertile soil.

Well, one of the reasons people pushed west was because of a concept called Manifest Destiny. Americans figured it was their God-given duty to expand from ocean to ocean and own all the land in between.

Beyond that, human curiosity led people like Lewis and Clark to explore and chart the land to the west.
