For me, it's certainly D.

Somewhat, it's A; when I started, I needed lots of help, now it's my turn to give back. My participation here is largely B; it's free street cred. Lots of what I give away falls into C; I've done it, I got paid, might as well give it away.

I don't think so, some companies developed free softwares for advertising purposes they create a software that is free and they will distribute it in the net, but in the future they will create a same software but has many feature far more better than the free one and if the people buy that software the demand for the developers will be high something like that. And company software intend to be replaced, sometimes it only last for a year and to develop a softwares it takes months or years. After that companies will be needing developers again and again. So i don't think that it will increase the unemployement for those developers

It depends... if by free software you are refering to Open Source software, then it's a way to release an OK product, and have the expertise of programmers all over the world continue to develop your software with you (assuming that it's something interesting enough)

This is also good for kicking co's like Microshaft in the backside.

If you are developing free distributable software for which you wholly and solely own and control the source then it's probably just because it's something that interests you, or you're trying to pump up your resume for that awesome SD job that you've had your eye on

Possibly D, though rarely is it "B." And in most cases, it is C more than anything...
