This is best explained by an example. Say a number 5 is increased to 8. Thus, the actual increase is 3. To find the percent increase means the relation between the actual increase to the original number.

so, divide 3 by 5 and multiply by 100 to get % increase
this gives 60 %

on the other hand, we start from 8 and decreased to 5, the same calcualtion is done except this time you say 60% DECREASE. Or, you can say -60%.

Example: The computer was regularly priced at $1500. If you order the computer over the internet, you can save money as the price is only $1200. What percent discount are you getting?

The regular price, which we will refer to as the "old" price is $1500. The sales price, which we can call the "new" price is $1200.

The change in price or discount is $1500-$1200 = $300.

If we divide the discount by the "old" price, we arrive at the percent change…
$300÷$1500 = .2 = 20% decrease

Simply, Here is what you must do -> newer value - original value --------------------------------------- x 100 original value Let's take the question mentioned by you, Percentage increase = 46.2 - 40 ------------- x 100 = 15.5 % 40 which is the required percentage. _______________________________________... [Note : If the percentage comes as a negative, that means it is a decrease percentage.] Consider a decrease in value from 50 to 30 So, Change in % = 30 - 50 ---------- x 100 = -40 % 50 Hence, there is a decrease of percentage by 40 %.

assume you have 2 numbers, x and y, x preceeding (e.g. original retail price vs currently discounted price).

if x > y, then it's a decrease. decrease % = ((MOD(x-y))/x) * 100

likewise, for increase. same formula. x is always the denominator

DIVIDE THE AMOUNT OF THE INCREASE OR DECREASE BY THE ORIGINAL NUMBER.
