The tub wasn't draining, so we called out a professional who tried to snake it - to unclog the hair blocking the drain... so we all thought. When he removed the overflow tub stopper handle, the hardware behind it was no where to be found. The handle that you flip up and down to stop the tub draining wasn't connected to anything. He thinks that the brass weight has fallen down to the "stop draining" position and is sitting there. Any ideas on how to get it out? He has a co-worker coming tomorrow to look at cutting the wall open behind the tub, to cut the pipe open, to retrieve the interior plug. I NEED SOME HELP TO COME UP WITH A CREATIVE WAY TO LOWER SOMETHING DOWN to hook the plug and simply pull it up. Any ideas?

Many thanks!!

That "professional". apparently, was NOT a professional. I wouldn't recommend letting him or one of his co-workers do anything else.
Though it does sound like he has diagnosed the problem, he does not sound near as creative as you. I had the same thing happen, but my "professional" WAS creative, and figured a way to fish it out, without dismantling the bathroom.....too bad he's not answering this because I didn't watch him.
You might try straightening a thin clothes hanger and making a small "J" shape hook on the end. Take your time while "fishing" and "feeling", it may take i few tries, even if it works.
I can't help you much, I just know that a "GOOD" plumber would at least try something "creative" before ripping out walls and costing you more money. Even if he can't get it, at least he tried before major surgery .
Good luck.

Is the part that you were able to bring out threaded or have a hook on the end of it. If it is threaded you can get a threaded wire with the same threads place a piece of rubber around it so as to center it in the hole. If it has a hook on it, take a piece of wire and form a hook and try fishing for the top of it. You may get lucky and get hold of it. I am thinking it is probably made of brass, which means a magnet will not work.

this problem happened to me as well and I found this post. while a coat hanger will probably eventually work, after about 10 minutes I grabbed a handy dandy plastic drain snake that I bought for about 5 bucks at home depot a few years ago. I snaked it down the hole, spun it around a few revolutions and snagged the weight on the first try.

Is there such a thing as a narrow wet vac tube that will fit down the pipe? Only thing I can think of. Hate to see you have your wall torn apart
