ms terrel needs 54 tiles for a new kitchen floor.The tile come in boxes of 8 tiles each.Each box costs $9.87. Its not possible to buy part of box.Estimate to the nearest dollar the least amount of money ms.terrel can bring to the store to buy all the tiles she needs.

A box of 8 tiles is approximately $10; just round up. And 54 tiles is close to 56 (round up to a multiple of 8).

56 tiles / 8 tiles per box = 7 boxes.

And using your prior estimate of $10 a box:
7 x $10 = $70

Ms. Terrel should bring $70.

54 divided by 8 is almost 7 and 7 x $9.87 = $69.09. it says to estimate so it would be $69. but then it also says the least amount of money she can bring to the store to buy all tiles she needs so then it could be $70 so that she doesnt have any more to pay and she can get everything she needs =]

She needs 54/8=6 2/3 boxes, but she will have to buy seven boxes. $9.87 x 7= $69.09 is the amount of money she needs for tile.This does not include tax.

divide 54 by 8
you get 6.75; but you can't buy part of a box. if you only buy 6 boxes, you still need .75 more; so you have to buy 7 boxes and deal with the left overs.

$9.87 * 7=$69.09
we want to the nearest dollar; but if she just brings 69 then she'll be 9 cents short , so she must bring 70 (excluding tax)
