Webber could not wear the number 4 because that number is retired. It belongs to team president, Joe Dumars. He chose the number 84 because he had a discussion with his 6 year old nephew, who says he had a dream, and Chris was wearing the number 84. Very unorthodox way of picking a number, but that is the reason. Hope this answers your question.
