Most people do it because it gives them a bigger sense of righteousness, that they are in some way better. It's not only people who are confident who are victims of it. People weak in confidence sometimes experience this ill-will, by putting these people down, they feel as though they are getting an edge.
It happens, and its likely that it happens to near enough everyone, but I guess we all suffer the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune sometimes.

Not sure it is so automatic. People want to be the best. They want to be the most successful, the most attractive, the strongest. Even the the town they live in they want to be the best. If your confidence exceeds their own...sometimes pulling you down is the easiest way to pull themselves up.
Show them gratitude for their thoughts, and their confidence will grow along with yours.
Regards and Powerful Thoughts

I think it depends on exactly how confident you are talking. Some people come off as so overly confident they get cocky and self-absorbed. Alot of people, including myself, do not like people who behave that way.

If you are referring to a healthy amount of confidence where people feel comfortable with themselves but no overly so then I would have to say that the people who are trying to pull them down are those who cannot find their own sense of self-esteem and self-worth. When people don't feel good about themselves sometimes they want others to feel as they do.

It is from fear and insecurity; fear that they are not all they can be, and insecurity that the confident person is trying to be everything they can.
