The agrarian economy of the South that depended on slave labour went into rapid decline. Many people were ruined financially because they had most of their wealth held in Confederate currency which were written against banks that were destroyed in the war..People would arrive from the North with a Carpetbag of Union money and buy up land. These "carpetbagggers"were deeply resentedThe North imposed a Utopian scheme called "The Reconstruction" on the South,Many of it's policies would not have been accepted if proposed in the North, but were imposed on the southerners.During the Reconstruction, there were Black Congressmen,Senators, a push to have schooling for Black children. The Repuplican party welcomed these people.Southern Democrats formed the KKK and began a campaign of terror to fight this change.President Grant's support was weakened in an election ,so he cut a back room deal to end Federal support of Reconstruction, ensuring 100 more years of Marginalization of Blacks.
