I'm 27wks pregnant and curious as to what causes an unborn baby to be either deaf or blind? There is no history of either of these in mine or my partners family, and there is no need for me to even be thinking of this however i'm a bit neurotic this week and this is my latest "thing to worry about".

Any ideas?

Thanks.

The two most common problems are measles in the mother during pregnancy for deafness and premature birth and treatment for blindness. The former has almost been eliminated by vaccination and the later almost omitted by covering the eyes when treating premature babies with pure O2 and UV. My wife is blind because of the latter in 1950.

Usually, genetic defects or early childhood diseases (most of which modern medicine can handle before anything bad happens) causes deafness and blindness. Additionally, if the womb has been exposed to a high degree of intense noises for long periods of time, that can cause some hearing problems (note I said CAN not would.) Calm down, you'll be just fine and so will your baby. Good luck!

ive been worried about this as well! From what ive read the baby has more of a chanc at becoming deaf during childhood from things like loud noises or multiple ear infections. I just read a statistic stating that out of the 19 million people who are hearing impaired only 4.4% of them were born that way.

U should not even think negative thoughts especially while pregnant, read to your stomach and make the baby smart.
