Lion fish are amazing. they can eat 6 goldfish in one day , but then they are good for two weeks i think. Its really amazing to watch. Another sweet fish is the speckled puffer fish. they are really cute! if u can get a starfish, they will clean the tank and are fun to watch too.

Im planning on getting a saltwater tank sometime too.

Good Luck!

You need something that will stay small. The rule of thumb for freshwater is one inch of fish for every gallon of water. That's WAY too much for saltwater! You will have to plan on one inch of fish for every 2-3 gallons of water in your tank. A pair of clownfish would work, but these are territorial and may bully any other fish, especially if they lay eggs. This is true of most of the damsels as well. Some peaceful fish that you could keep are green chromis damsels (3-5 dollars in most stores), a canary blenny, a firefish, a longnose hawkfish, or any of the cardinal fish (these can vary from 10-50 dollars - saltwater tanks don't come cheap!). The chromis can be kept in a school, the clownfish or cardinal fish should be kept as singles or a pair, and the rest as singles. Another type of fish you can keep are mollies (the kind that are sold as freshwater fish). If you don't have any fish in your tank yet, you can get a pair of mollies (you fish store can easily get you a male and female) and start them in water with just a teaspoon of salt for each gallon of water. Add a tablespoon or two of salt every day till you get it up to marine conditions (you will need a specific gravity meter to track your progress - you can get one through a pet store). You will want your salinity to measure between 1.020 and 1.023 if you are going to keep just fish, or 1.024-1.026 if you want to keep snails, crabs, a starfish, etc. After you get it to this strength, you can other marine fish if you want. You might want to try a lionfish down the line, but be aware that these fish have venemous spines in their fins!

Good luck!

cycle with damsels, cheap, and hearty fish, also have good color so you at least have something to look at. then once tank is healthy enough you can purchase some nicer fish
