I am thinking of getting an Emu as a pet on our small farm. Are they good pets? Are the friendly?

My mothers best friend has a emu. She has rasied them for 25 years. She has 2 of her own. 1 female and 1 male. As another person said females are nicer, but not when they have there young. Teh female she has is ok tempered. The male has a agresive attutude. As for a good pet I would say go for it. After all they are GREAT money makers. When you sell a Emu egg people pay over 4,000 dollars for just one single egg, only if its in good shape.

There are two sides to the "emu as pet" debate: they can be friendly and gentle or.......they pack a powerful kick. Here are some sites that should help

Identify some emu owners in your area and go visit them, most exotics owners are all too happy to answer your questions and if you do get an emu, you'll know who to ask when problems arise. You might also see if there's an "emu rescue" group for your state. There probably is and you can adopt one from them. Do a search on your state and the words "emu" and "rescue".

I have heard that only native Australians can keep them. Our neighbour has one and it makes freaky drumming sounds when we walk past witth the dog. I saw it charge at the dogs it obviously lives with!

my neighbor has one that is nice... but they raised it from a baby. good luck
