The energy from the rapidly moving hot-air molecules transfers to the nearby cold-air molecules, making them move faster. When it moves faster it moves farther and that's why it expands.
Like if you were walking around in a square on the ground, and then you started running, you couldn't stop so easily and you would need more room to run than to walk.
