Would you say that it traps you in the system and inhibits you from "getting out?" (No insentive to further yourself)
I'm asking because I work at a grocery store, and it seems like every over half of the polynesian people that come through have food stamps. It's as if people become stuck in the system.

It's sad cuz I'm polynesian as well and everyone knows darn well that they could get off the system if the tried.

I disagree. I think if people really wanted to get out of the welfare system they could if they went to school to get a better education, acquire new skills or climb the company ladder at their jobs. All it takes is hard work and determination.

It's probably more the environment than the program.
If you grow up in surroundings that discourage education, has high levels of drug/alcohol addiction, poverty, it has to have an effect on where you end up.

I had a friend who was not well educated, resented educated people (they were usually the bosses who looked down on him) and grew up tough. He respected tough people. His kids were whizzes at school work in elementary, but were casually made fun of (at least a couple of times in my presence) because making A's made them seem less 'manly'. They got praised when they got into fights at school (if they won the fight). The ended up dropping out of high school and getting manual jobs.

Education (and job opportunities) start at home. When you throw in relative poverty (lack of educational resources) it helps create bad outcomes.

Peace

Getting trapped in the system isnt just about welfare stamps once you get in the sytem you never get out. whether its the judicial sytem, the money sysytem, or in your case the welfar system; the government is a tricky evil place. I guess once the polynesians get in they couldnt get out. Send them my luck.

No, it is not a trap. I used a couple different assistance programs when I first got married. I was able to finish my education and find better employment. I no longer qualify for the programs.
