Ok i have a 87 vw golf then when it sits like at red lights and stuff it has recently started to run hotter, although it never over heats we just bought it 5 months ago and had to add antifreeze twice, and can find no evidence of a leak no puddels underneath the car, or antifreeze on the engine, but the car sat for 3 years prior to us buying it.( guy was gonna fix it to race but bought audi instead) The car does have a funny smell to it but to me it smells more like gas then antifreeze. Also we have some problem getting it to start when it cold the guy we got it from said somthing aabout a temp. gage, could that have to do with it running hot some ppl replyed that it goud be somthing wrong with the headgasket like a pin whole size leak , any one know the cost of getting somthing like this fixed, is it even worth it on such an old car, i have heard it can be pricey, or any other ideas on what it could be?

i own a repair shop, and i think what may have happened here is is had problems when they parked it,,probably this problem your having,,but id say ,from my experience as a mechanic it may have a head gasket seeping a little anti freeze in to a cylinder on it,,this may have been why they stopped driving it,,but this can be checked,,by doing a pressure check on it,,you might want to have this done,,drive it too much,,and it will probably get a lot worse on it,,and it may even cause some damage to the engine, good luck with it,i hope this help,s.
