When lawyers argue their cases in the courtroom, they use all their skills and knowledge to make their case strong to get a favourable judgement. In some cases, the lawyers for the opposite side are equally capable and give their own strong arguments and try to counter the arguments of the opposite lawyers.
This matching of wits of the two sides with strong arguments, replies and counter-arguments, is called 'pitting of wits'. The origin of this expression is possibly the practice of olden days when birds/animals used to be put to fight in 'pits' when humans would watch and place bets on the outcome.

to "battle" a battle of wits or battle of intelligence. Picture two lawyers arguing for or against a case. One will say something witty (or smart) and the other will counter argue, or say something smart from the other perspective.
