The ship was not filled with helium but hydrogen. It was originally planned to have been filled with helium but due to a United States military embargo hydrogen had to be used. Until the last couple of years it was always thought that the hydrogen had exploded destroying the ship. However in the last two years it was discovered that the ship exploded because of the covering. It was skinned in cotton, and varnished with iron oxide and cellulose acetate butyrate impregnated with aluminum powder; which it turned out made a explosive situation. There quite a few papers out on the change of opinion in what caused the destruction.

It was an airship filled with the highly flammable gas Helium and as it was landing it suddenly exploded probably due to the Helium and certain metals in the paint which inadvertently caused a chemical reaction and killed quite a few people within about 30 seconds.
