Just so you know 4-5 years is not a long lifespan. Look at goldfish who live 20+ years when properly cared for.

Anyway to answer your question, bettas will live around 3-5 years when properly cared for, and sometimes longer.(although this is rare) They will swim at the top.

If you've not had a lot of luck and not more then two fish, go for a betta. Other then that you can try a school of giant danios or hachets, watch out, both these species jump. If you can find it, an african butterfly fish is super cool, i guess you could keep one, but they are a little tricky for a beginner.

As for the store, it depends on the store. I work in a Petland and are tanks are WONDERFUL, because I make them that way, its a franchise and can differer from one to another. Get fish from a store where they seem to medicate sick fish, tanks look clean and filters/filter system seems to work.

If you told me the temp, size, parameters and how heavily planted your tank is, I might be able to make better suggestions for you.

Most fish don't have such a long span (except Goldfish), but Betta fish swim all over, top included, and can live for a few years. They will come up right close to be fed, and show an interest when there is something happening in the house.
Be careful with mixing other fish and a Betta. I had platys that went after my Betta because of his long tail, and had to be separated. I have heard that tetras are OK with Betta, but tetras need to be in a group. Don't put two Bettas together, you will have trouble.
If you choose a Betta, don't put him in a Betta jar - he needs a heated, filtered tank with room to swim.
If this all sounds like too much hassle, stick to two goldfish. They don't need heat, just a filtered tank.

Beta fish live a very long time, and are usually cheap. You usually find only the males, and they are the pretty ones. The only down side is that you can't put two of them together, as they are very aggressive, and will fight each other. They are reasonably easy fish to take care of, and only require a 10-12 gallon tank. Just feed them twice a day, and clean their tank every two weeks, and they are fine. The males come in many different colors. They can be found at any petstore.

An Oscar sounds like a good fish for you then. They tend to stay close around the middle of the tank, or at least mine does. They can live up to 7 or 8 years, I have heard. They also come in pretty colors like orange/white or black/orange.

Beware though, they do grow up to be big fish depending on what you feed them.

I have 2 mexican walking fish (axolotyl) they are the best! they have a life span of 15-20years and need to be hand fed. they are prehistoric little creatures that walk around on 4 legs and watch you as you sit near them or walk past.
