When doing research your topic should be something that YOU personally are curious about and want to find out, and in the case of doing a paper, it should be a topic where you can find out what other people have researched and found out if that's the type of research you are doing. At first you may think that you are not really interested in anything. But once you start thinking you'd be surprised to see how many things you could really be into.
The first part of doing any writing whatsoever is the "THINKING ABOUT IT" stage. It's part of the writing process. It seems like you are doing this already which is good and you are getting snagged which is normal. This means you are at least thinking about it.
To come up with some ideas, start with yourself. What bugs you about your own family? Are you interested in whether or not birth order has an impact on personality? Did you ever wonder whether or not gay couples are as affective as parents and hetero parents? These are just examples. As far as the environment - you could research how many people take recycling seriously and how far they will go to recycle. The point is to start with what you are curious about. Then, think about the question in terms of whether or not information is available out there to research. Then, shape the topic into a sentence as your thesis. That's all there really is to it. I don't know your age/grade in school etc.. but make sure your paper is organized and not just a bunch of facts and paragraphs . If your teacher has not gone over this part with you (the organization part of the paper) then you must request he or she to do so before you start the paper.
Start thinking about what bugs you personally or what you are curious about.

I did a great research paper about why gas prices aren't too high in the USA. It really made me aware of a lot of economic factors that go into the marketing of hydrocarbon products and you might be able to use it seeing that you can pick a topic related to the environment.

You might also be able to do something on raising children and how they grow up to treat their family as a teenager and adult. There's some very interesting facts related to that that you probably wouldn't have expected.

You can do a research paper on the family structure based on thier enviroment. For example you could take Inner City families and compare and contrast them to Suburban familes. Talk about which group tends to have more children which group tends to have both parents present and tings like that. I"m sure you can find more than enough information and surveys and polls to write about that.

properly if you may do any era and any empire/usa. i might want to attempt the three Kingdoms era of China. Its easily an truly interesting subject matter to analyze for. i'm also presently doing a analyze project for AP heritage. My instructor stated that he has written like a e book on the blunders that got here about for the period of D-Day and the way it would want to change the outcome. So thats also a robust subject matter.
