If your around 13, live 5 or so hours away from LA/Hollywood, really want to act as a career, but know you have no way, what should you do? Should you wait until your 18 then move to LA to get started or tell my parents now (they would probably just laugh)? Or should you pick an entirely different career that you're not as into?

First, you need to realize that despite what one reads in People/Star or watches on ETV, acting is a job/profession. I"m not being patronizing here, folks a LOT older than you have difficulty realizing that the "reporting" on the entertainment industry is, well, PR-hype to be polite.
Here's what you should consider:
1- take some acting classes at school. This will help decide if you REALLY want to do this.
2- As you move into High School, start talking drama teachers etc, for possible college scholarships in fine arts. You can also start developing your talents, by working in school and local theater productions
3- Only about 1 in 300/400 potential actors/actresses actually make enough money to live comfortably, let alone party like one sees on TV. You really need to have a skill/skills that are marketable on the side. These will pay the rent until you start making some cash. In college you can double major in drama/communications and maybe something else like business/IT etc.
4- There's more to the entertainment industry than "just" acting. Production, tech support, marketing are all important, and well paying aspects of the profession.
Most importantly, don't give up your dreams. Hey, I had advisors in HS telling me I would never be a pilot in the Air Force; made them look stupid. BUT, you gotta realize we all live in the real world. That world means: bills, rent/mortgage, car payments, school loans.

Audition for a school or community play for starters. When you get parts don't stop, keep doing it, this will show your parents that you're sincere about acting and it will help when you do get to Hollywood.

Remember that rejection is a part of life in Hollywood. It's nothing personal, I've dabbled in acting and I've had a lot of fun doing background and the occasional bit part on a few shows.

My advice to you is this: don't take it too seriously, if you make it then great and if you don't then you know you had fun doing it!
