To start, metals will lose electrons and become cations (positively charged). Non metals will gain electrons and become anions (negatively charged)

Many metals have properties which include conductance of electricity, magnetism (some), malleable, ductile.

Non metals are usually gases and are on the right side of the periodic table.. and they are poor conductors of electricity and heat. metals are usually solids (at room temp.) and they are really good conductors of electricity and heat and are on the left of the periodic table.
