As a child, my uncle told me that was a way you could catch a rabbit. lol Never really tried it but I guess it would work with a bird just as well.

I forgot what it was like to be young and dumb.

i don't know but i think it would not work
but i know another way to catch a bird is to put a heavy box up side down and lift one side of the box up with a stick with string tightening on it. put some bread under the box until the bird comes and then when it is eating, you pull the string quickly and let it fall on the bird before it could fly away and trap it inside the heavy box.

Large tropical birds can be caught by getting a water hose and spraying them. The feathers get wet and they cannot fly, will fall to the ground, just watch out they have powerful beaks. This will work with most birds.
