Is is possible for a lighter to explode in yor face and cause severe burns 1st and 2nd degree?
my son said he was lighting a cigarette and it expolded and burned his facial hair off and caused skin to peel off and eyes swell. he went to E.R. and was given morfine and ointment.

Anything is possible but I would be very suspicious of it being something he should not be doing. Crack, hairspray, gasoline, etc.

Perhaps you should discuss suing the lighter company and ask him about witnesses, where's the lighter, etc. If he don't wanna' talk, well you take it from there.

It did happen to me once. The top came off the lighter and it DID flash burn my face. Just a bit of singed hair, not any real burns. I might be a bit suspicious if his face is really burned; but then he may have taken a much bigger "hit" of the fule than I did. To this day I do not look down when I light my cig....I hold it a bit out from my face.

Fire burns. If his lighter created fire, it would burn him, and it could be severe. Just another reason I can think of for not smoking.

yup. Especially if what is being smoked has volatiles in it.
