He needs enough water in his tank to actually swim around in. Along with a basking area where the temp is about 85 degrees or so where he can get completely out of the water. If not, his shell will get soft. I suggest a floating turtle dock, or arrange bricks to where he can climb all of the way our of the water.

I have a 50 gallon tank with 2 young adult red ear sliders and 1 baby red ear slider. The thing about red ear sliders that you have to keep in mind is how they live in a natural habitat. Red ear sliders live in ponds or creeks, or lakes where they are underwater most of the time, and they feel more secure to be able to submerge as well. The only time sliders come out of the water in nature is to bask out in the sun and catch some rays. In conclusion, I do not think it is very smart to just have a water dish for your turtle. You should really look into filling up your tank at least 3/4 of the way up and having some type of floating rock or log (which you can buy at any pet store) so that your turtle can bask under a heat lamp. The basking spot for your turtle must reach at least 93 degrees F. I don't mean to put you down or be rude, but if it bothers you to have to reach in water to grab your turtle then perhaps a turtle isn't the pet for you. Turtles are extremely dirty pets and can begin to cause very bad odors because their water isn't treated properly. if you don't change their water as often as you should it can begin to create salmonella from their feces and your turtle will even run risk of getting sick. Hope this helps you out some! Good luck ;-)

Red-eared sliders are fresh water turtles who need mostly water and some land like 75% water 25% land and you should put a filter system in the water. It doesn't need a seperate dish for water. And pleases do some research on this turtle, instead of taking the time to write this you should have just looked it up on Google.

Sliders eat lots of stuff but often go on hunger strikes. If your slider stops eating try very small earthworms (live only) to bring them out of it. the worms are fattening so don't overdo. One large water dish for swimming and drinking but keep it clean. I've never had much luck with food pellets -- I prefer feeding live foods. Sliders can go for long periods of time without eating but don't let them do it. Just a comment -- it's not a good idea to take on a pet you don't know anything about so study up quick and use the tons of info available on the internet. Turtles of all sorts need calcium for their shells and bones so a calcium block from the pet store would be needed.

Turtle pellets are the best food for your turtle. They will drink the water they swim in so please keep it clean. If you get the floating pellets, just drop a few in the water and leave them for a while. If they disappear you know that its is eating them. Any left should be removed after an hour or so. You can also give him worms, lettuce and even live fish such as goldfish for treats but the pellets are a balanced diet so for a healthy turtle, feed him mainly the pellets.
Bricks or rocks are not good things for them to climb out on as they will scrap the bottom of their shells on the hard surfaces and in time, it can wear right though their shell if its really rough. I would suggest a floating platform from a pet store.

My slider needs an actual tank to swim in. they drink that water too, so you have to have a good filter system and also change it often. They also need a sunlamp, and a place to bask in it out of the water. they eat turtle pellets or fish...
go online and look for info.

it's best to have them completely surrounded by water, with a basking lamp and a surface to rest on. My turtle prefers small crickets or meal worms to pellets. He eats about 10 a day. I get both of these at pet stores, like petsmart.

They only need the water that you have in the tank for them to swim in. I used to feed my turtle feeder fish or tubafex worms. Sometimes they are shy and want to eat alone.
