Fantasy series is still definitely Lord of the Rings (and The Hobbit), for the characters are so credible, evil so palpable, and the sense of triumph conditioned by the sense of loss and suffering.

Fantasy series with adolescent characters, Harry Potter definitely, for those mouthy teenagers are straight out of every junior high school & high school I've ever been in, velly British and velly mod.

Children's fantasy series, maybe Narnia but also the much overlooked Prydain series by Lloyd Alexander. Great stories drawn from Welsh legend, fascinating characters, imaginative and believable creatures and magic, and good sense of humor. These books grow with their characters and their readers, climaxing in the dark, mature High King. Good for children and their adults.

Realistic series, no holds barred, the Aubrey-Maturin series (20 volumes!) by Patrick O'Brian, great books of the sea set in Napoleonic era with hair-raising adventure, great sense of humor and of history, love stories from male point of view, and heroes who aren't too heroic.

"The series portrays the rise of Jack Aubrey from Lieutenant to Rear Admiral in the Royal Navy during the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars. Many of his exploits and reverses are based on the chequered career of Thomas Cochrane. However, his character and his politics are quite different from those of his model.

"Aubrey's friend Stephen Maturin [the ship's surgeon] is an Irish-Catalan physician, naturalist and spy. In his role as a naturalist he is based on Sir Joseph Banks. A recurring theme is his long pursuit of the beautiful but unreliable Diana Villiers."

i ought to assert that one in all my in demand sequence of all time must be the sequence "A music of Ice and fire" by using George R.R. Martin. that's a fable saga, currenty 4 books long, and is so exciting simply by fact it is so lifelike. it particularly is not your regularly occurring the hero wins and all undesirable adult males die kind of sequence, particularly that's approximately destruction and loss. once you first initiate accessible are in all risk approximately 10 or 15 diverse characters that the author writes of and shows by using their attitude. by using the 4th e book there are approximately 5 left, and purely a pair of them heroes. all the super heros you think of are going to sparkling up all the matters die and all the undesirable adult males seem to stay alive and healthful. the place i'm suitable now i'm undecided who's solid or undesirable and am VERY perplexed. i like it. :)
