My kid is starting a hockey skills program and I got some hand me down equipment, but I don't know if the chest pad/shoulder pads fit right. How much of the belly should be covered by the chest pad?

The chest pads should allow room to move without being too loose and should come down an inch or two over the top of the pants - make sure they are pulled up high enough around the waist and tightened enough so they stay up. Also the shoulder pads will just meet or overlap the elbow pads if it's a proper fit. Welcome to the hockey mom/dad world. Maybe we'll see you at a game!

If I were you I would call or go to the local used equipment store and talk to one of the salespeople. Bring your kid's equipment with you and try it on there. If the person is honest and it all works you are good. If it does not you can trade in the gear for the right size pieces and only have to shell out a little money. It is hard for any of us over the computer to tell if it fits and you do not want your child to dislike the sport because the equipment does not fit. A good place is Play It Again Sports. Look in the Yellow Pages under Sporting Goods Retail and look for an ad that has used equipment or buy-sell-trade.

it should fit over his ribcage - should at least be a few inches below his sternum (the center bone between the ribcage, ending at the top of your soft stomach area). it's supposed to protect that area!
