Umm...in 5th grade I did a science project. The topic was "Do blood relatives have similar fingerprints?" Kinda lame, but..whatever. Oh, and my friend got 3 carnations. She put one in red colored water, one in blue, and one in green. She left em there for awhile, and the flower changed color. (use white carnations) That one was really cool!!

Half Hour Roller Coaster

ok, i actually did this in the 6th grade. i worked with a partner but we got a 98% on it! stack up about 5 coffee cans on top of one another and then attach some strong plastic or rubber tubing to the top of it to make a rollercoaster. put some hills in it and a "loopty-doo". then label the points of most velocity, least velocity, most friction,...ect... then get a BB and a marbel, or a few different round items and drop down the tubing to see if the weight of the object matters. This is simple and fun! For more impressve endings, curve the bottom end of the tubbing up a little and drop the marbel or whatever you are using down it a few times, see where it lands and then place a tray of water at that position. in the end, the BB or marbel or whatever will fall into the water leaving her classmates amazed!

Do a project that asks how age effects lung power.
I got first place. All you have to do is know the persons age, and have them use 1 breath to blow up a balloon. Measure the circumference of the balloon, and record. (Make sure you do lots of differnet aged people, and use a graph)

my favorite was the taste test on the tongue or music's affect on class work.
for the taste buds one check the link below.
for the music one
1. make four small groups of 4 or 5 from like other kids from her class or her school.(ask the teacher for help to select the groups as to get students on the same level)
2. pick three types of music (for example:classical, rap, rock).
3. assign each group a type of music and one group no music (the control group)
4. make a test with 30 to 50 questions (math is the easiest to test)
5. give each group the tests and grade them based on accuracy and time it takes to complete the test.
6. make two charts one comparing the time needed to complete the test and one graphing the different accuracies.
7. Draw a conclusion from the groups based on accuracy and time to take test as the best form of music to listen to, worst, etc. and you have a money project

I did a cool global warming one. You will need the following stuff:

two jam jars, one with soil in it, one without
Clear tape to cover openings
two thermometers (I used meat thermos with the pointy tip)
a sunny day or a heat lamp.

The temperature inside the jar without soil will rise pretty fast in the sun (the glass acts like a greenhouse) the temp inside the one WITH the soil will rise even faster, and get hotter - the soil acts as a heat sink.

This is a really easy, fast, dramatic experiment, and you can connect it to global warming, or even those ads you see for not leaving your pet in the car on a sunny day...good luck!
