depends on what brand you get really, i have the kenmore stackables the H2 series they are WONDERFUL though i love them they get things cleaner and do more laundry at once. I paid 699.00 for the dryer and 799 for the washer but then they had a special going that if you bought 2 over 300 each you got i think 10 or 15% back that was a pretty good deal, they are no smaller actualy the ones i have are not anyways. Love them though!!!!!!! I had alot of trouble with sears , that is where i got them they were a pain in the A$$ I sugesting looking at home depo or somewhere else. Good luck and if you get them You will LOVE Them, they are also amazingly quiet! At first i was like um are you sure the washer is on? lol good luck.

There are several kinds. Some stackables come that way from the factory, others can be stacked at the customer's home using a kit from the mfr. (The units are built for side-by-side, or on pedastals, or stacked.)
Whirlpool and GE make factory stackables.
Frigidaire (owned by Electrolux) and Maytag, among others, make the stackables assembled in your home. A salesperson claimed that Frigidaire also sold their machines to other companies, who put their logos on the front.
Price ranges are $800 up to $2500 for the pair, depending on mfr, size/capacity, and features. Capacity and width seem to be a big difference affecting cost - narrow ones cost less, but they hold a lot less laundry. Full-size models can run in the $1200-1500 range, and the Bosch or Meile units cost north of $2000.
Check with Consumer Reports magazine for comparisons. I have a Frigidaire and am very satisfied.

You'll pay a bit more for a stackable w&d and you can get them in apartment size or full size. I've had both and LOVED them. When my current w&d bite the dust I'm going back to stackable! Brand is not as important as features. Check Sears, Lowes, Home Depot or any other store that sells appliances. Look for a good energy rating to help offset the purchase price over the long term.

Consumer Reports is your best bet...
or simply type in :"whats the best washer/dryer combo on the market"
Stackables r smaller, more compact in size but they work fine. Lest your man is a construction worker...their clothes need heavy duty washers
