someone told me at the vet's office that they cured their dog of heartworms by giving him whiskey everyday until a clear test result came back. has anyone heard of this? any other remedies or advice from those who have been through this with their dog?

Hummmm, never heard of that one. You really must be very careful and not try anything other than treatment from a vet for heart-worms. Prevention is always number one, because the cure for adult heart-worms can sometimes be fatal in itself. If the worms are killed too quickly/suddenly, the dead worms can result in artery blockage and death. These worms actually do live in the heart and they are quite large. They look like spaghetti....That's why a dog must always be checked for micro-filarae (the microscopic "baby" heart-worms) before preventative treatment. If there are micro-filarae in the blood stream, there are adult worms in the heart. If the dog already has adult worms, the preventative medicine may prove fatal by killing the adult worms suddenly.

My heartworm remedy: get it treated by a freaking vet.

Why a vet gave his dog whiskey instead of heartworm treatment is beyond me. I'm fostering a dog from the animal shelter who has heartworm, and I would never try to cure her by other means than what the vet advised. You might want to ask for some college diplomas from this guy..

My dog had heartworm 6 years ago. He received arsenic shots at the vet. He is still alive. I am not sure what they do now a days. The whole whiskey thing is a wives tale I believe. My dog is completely cured.

I've never heard of this and I can't imagine it to be healthy for the dog. I am a Licensed Veterinary Technician, and I know we would never do that to treat an animal. If your dog has heartworms, it could have very easily and inexpensively been prevented and is now expensive and possibly dangerous to treat, as the dying worms can cause pulmonary emboli and possibly kill the dog.

No. Someone is LYING. Do you really think a vet would do that?? That would be pretty unethical!!!!!! There are no "home remedies" to cure heartworm disease.

NOOOO!!!!!!! Do not even be tempted to try this, PLEASE, leave this in the hands of your vet. I am not yet a vet but have been involved in vet industry. Listen to the Vet Tech she speaks the truth!
