Its all a matter of economics. Diesel engines sell for more because of the technology behind it. As with anything, the more you get from something, the more it will cost. Diesel engines yield more milage per gallon, so they charge you more for the vehicle as well as the fuel.

Toyota has managed to dominate the import market almost single handedly, now they are making a move for the big three in the U.S., so why bother with diesels, when they are selling more gasoline units than ever before.

Profit margins for Toyota are impressive and their liquid cash assets are beyond belief, so why ruin a sure thing, and the secured market share.

Because its a whole new line of manufacturing for Toyota..Diesel engines required much more maintenance than gasoline engine and Toyota sells much more of it than GM and Fords by quantity proportional. Also there're more competition with GM trucks/ Ford where it has been dominated US markets for 30-40 yrs. Less mechanics were trained to work with Toyota Diesels engine comparing to GM/Ford. Last of all, most of Toyota gasoline engine is far more reliable and mostly economy why should they start to invest in Diesels ?

EPA emissions regulations.

You will see more Diesel engines here in the US starting in 2007. We now use an Ultra Low Sulphur Diesel fuel plus specific components that clean the emissions so now diesel engines can run in the U.S. as clean as regular gasoline motors.

They stopped selling them in the US in 86 if memory serves, but continued to sell them to the Canadian market. They stopped because they couldn't meet the needed clean air standards for sale here.
