I haven't heard any late gossip on this, but it does come up periodically. I'm quite sure China would like to secure Taiwan the same way it did Hong Kong, in a bloodless coup!

China claims ownership of Taiwan, yet it has been an independent island nation since 1949. At some point in time China may attempt to take Taiwan by force. This could be devastating to both, because know body knows for sure just what weapons Taiwan has, plus the US is committed to protect Taiwan, the same way it is committed to protect Japan. A provocative move by China could quickly raise the stakes in the S.Pacific where tensions are already at the brink!

Taiwan has been seeking independence from China as far back as the Qing(Ch'ing) Dynasty. This effort was interrupted by Japanese occupation in 1895, only to resume again after World War II, when the Kuomintang got it back, and then ended up in exile on the island after Mao Zedong took over the mainland four years later. Neither Nationalist nor Communist China recognize Taiwan as an independent nation, but Red China has been trying to take it as far back as the Maoist Revolution.
