The Soviet air force had, at the outset of WW2, almost 5000 aircraft. The major types were:
Attack: Pe-2, IL-2 ("Sturmovik, forerunner of the A10/SU25),SB-2
Fighter: IL-16 (Rata, "Rat" so named from the Spanish Civil War), Po 152 Chaika-later converted to night attack. The Finns also used several captured examples; MiG1/3, Yak3/9, LaGG 5,
Bombers: TB3, Pe-8 (launched a few strikes on Berlin; had 4xdiesel engines)
The Soviets were extensive users of Lend Lease P39, P40, P63 A20, B25's.
